can't retrive thrall back from it.

actualy i never removed it after puting thrall inside , that might help with retrival.
I understand they can't give it the same functionality as the Lesser Wheel of Pain, since then it would have to cost just as much to construct, which would make it too costly for roleplay decoration purposes. Maybe they felt the ability to save an unbroken captive for later would have been a balance issue too, I don't know. It feels like wasted potential as it is now.
Hopefully a future update will do something better with it?
EDIT: What I'd most prefer is if it worked like the Nemedian hanging cage or Nemedian stocks, where you can post a Thrall to "guard" it and they snap into position inside the trap. Those only work with Thralls already placed in the world, though, not untamed enemies.
