Both building your base and decorating it with cosmetic objects, and with converting Thralls (NPCs that can fight/work for you), and equipping them with (transmog-able) clothes/armor and weapons, there is alot of playing around with the cosmetic aspects of the game.
So all those DLC are packs of cosmetic items (building parts, deco and equip) that follow a specific (cultural) design, like Argos/Jewel of the West being greek/roman inspired, Treasures of Turan middle-east/persian, Imperial East/Seekers of Dawn is far east/asian, and People of the Dragon Pack is medieval europe.
The Riddle of Steel DLC is a pack of statues and stuff from the first Schwarzenegger Conan movie with likeness of the characters. A must-have for any fan of that movie. :D
No pay2win anywhere, no (non-cosmetical) content locked behind DLC.
Actually, there is alot of free custom objects and visuals available with free mods, making the DLC even less interesting.
And Siptah is an Expansion, that adds another map and some new stuff, but is actually seperated from the base map and game. It's not like you miss out on anything regarding the base game experience without Siptah.
SO you can perfectly enjoy the game for its base price, and ignore all the DLC and ingame monetization, the base content is more than enough, and just get DLC or bazar offers, if you are really into the visuals and want to build something with it.
And the Battlepass, you would have to buy the premium tier once for currency worth $10, but you also get exactly that amount back with each premium BP, so would have to only buy it once and when finishing it, have enough for the next one.
All that said, while I don't bother with the Bazaar, getting most of the DLC (on sale) and the BP once (so, "forever" as long as I complete each one) was definetly worth it to me over time, just to build different cultural bases in different biomes.
There's a spark of something great with the game, but the execution of various aspects leaves a bit to be desired. Combat's iffy, there isn't much of a narrative to motivate progression, and building can be a time and resource sink in singleplayer. I'd feel bad if you wanted to do multiplayer, as the Official servers are not very well-regarded, and the average private server is named something like 'Darkest Desires 18+ ERP BDSM'.
But the main appeal of the game is to live in the Conan universe, so to speak. Fighting cannibals and maniacs out in the desert has its charms. Slavery is fun. You could build up a harem of redheaded ladies if you were so inclined. Exploration is also pretty good, at least for your first time around (as it's a fixed map). It's the feel of the world and the universe that it's tied to that gives the game that spark of greatness, at least to me.
In addition, game settings can be adjusted at any time in singleplayer to better fit your playstyle, which can be very helpful.
If it's cheap, I'd say probably give it a try, just have tempered expectations. It's not a polished game in any real sense.
The game will also try and connect to 'Funcom Live Services' upon starting the game up, whether you're playing multiplayer or not. I don't think it can be avoided the first time, but having Steam in Offline Mode should allow to avoid that later on.
There are a few things that are handy in some of the downloads, like being able to cast spells and retrieve your body and all your equipment from your base without running halfway across the world to get your equipment back.
My favorite in the Sorcery pack in addition to summoning your dead body is being able to change the appearance of your armor so you can wear something besides what looks like iron armor without giving up your protection. So if I was going to buy only one add on it would be Sorcery.
But you can play the game without buying anything and have just as much fun,
This is a little misleading, "purchased the updates", there is no update to the game mechanics that requires spending money to get, as mentioned already DLC and bazaar items are cosmetic only. There is no "sorcery pack" that players can buy which adds anything other than cosmetics, all those functions you mentioned were added into the base game as part of the age of sorcery content update, which was free for everyone.
Absolutely yes. The base game and vanilla map are actually worth the full price so a real bargain when on sale.
Just be aware there are a number of lingering bugs (nothing really game breaking that I'm aware of, mostly just increasingly annoying) which they seem disinclined to do anything about.
I paid a couple buck some years ago to go to a place in which mostly what happened was I being punched in several parts of my body for extended periods of time, "was it worth it" ?
To me, in the context, probably.
Some people started in the same thing, paid the same price, and left couple months after because apparently they did not expected that joining a dojo meant being punched in several parts of your body for extended periods of time.
Depending on what one wants from the game, it is worth, or not.
But sure you wont be better off by not having DLCs or extra paid content if what you want is in there.
While everyone suffer the bugs, like they say, it is better to have a full Stormglass Set Castle to be bugged in.
Its riddled with bugs and cheaters.
I supported this game by buying their dlc, but since we have this overpriced bazaar, and they just keep ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with people I decided to not throw even a euro to these people's pocket.
Whaaat I really don't understand... is... why they don't make inner walls ? That Stormglass one looks like a garbage.
Sadly after 11K+ in this game I can't really say any positive, modders are keeping this game alive with THEIR hard work.
