I only partial agree with you here. Yes, passive ressource generation for onetime costs is a critical point for every crafting/survival game, but it depends on alot more points, just to name a few:
- how much gets produced per time frame
- how much is the demand (per time frame)
- how long the thing needs to run in order to break even
- are there other options to get the ressouce and if yes, how much the average player is able to gather per time frame
- what prerequisite are there to unlock
Depending on those points, it ranges from "It's fine in order to give the player more time for other tasks" over "it's strong, once you get there" up to "gamebreaking op ♥♥♥♥".
For honey in particular, bee hives are the only option (at least I know) for honey, the passive production per hive isn't that high and honey ranges, at least for me, at the lower end of the priority list for ressources.
OTOH I do need the extra sink for insects which otherwise clutter up my inventory. I get more than I need for fish, Derkerto, Dafari cooking recipe's, and still I find myself having to drop stacks of 100 insects at times to make room in inventory for other items.
Err... what do you use all the other stuff for, that you end up with that much insects as side product?
I personally only rarely take out my sicle, therefore I somethimes really think about harvesting some fibers just to get hands on some bugs for fishing.
It does require having to move the grubs every now and then, but it is essentially passive resource generation, and given the time it takes and resources being generated, it is hardly game breaking.
