That kind of thing should be what you need to do to get an amazing meta pet. If I want to casually keep a pet on me for travel they should be able to live more than five minutes without the right build. Currently, I see it as a useless feature that way.
Instead, if you are admin or SP you can use the PiPi management mod that gives access to some tools you can use to manually balance out your pets. Unfortunately, you would need to do this every time you get a new individual pet - the changes are per actor, not global NPC changes. For my server, I plan on introducing a super expensive/limited in game token to get me to come and edit players' pets so that they perform like a sabretooth, but look and act like a wolf or whatever they wish. But..... its a lot to set up. All can be done in the PiPi mod in game, though!
PS: the main reasons I like pets is they are fairly accessible at the start of the game, have more carry slots, look awesome, and don't need fancy equipment to deal serious damage. They are very squishy so they need baby-sitting for the first 5 levels, and I wouldn't put them up against any bosses until lvl 10+ ish, depending on the pet and my playstyle/setup. I ALWAYS go authority build, but don't get access to the final perk until lvl 25 because i need 5 in expertise to be able to carry just the essentials. HINT: Hyenas are easy to acquire and level up fairly fast so they tend to survive the longest for me. Once I gain access to the midnight dungeon and shadebloom, I go for sabretooth because they are one of the few pets that still have decent stats for surviving a few good boss hits.
At the end of the day, Thralls will outperform pets every single time because Funcom hates pets and nerfed em. I didn't feel they were OP but I only play PVE. I feel that funcom are always very heavy handed with both buffing and nerfing. They really need to work on balance....
