What ever stats they get is it for them. You cannot improve that with items.
Start a new map -> toss animals in cheap cages -> log back in after several hours -> play game.
They're not so bad if you take the companion perk that boosts stats.
Still not as good as thralls but definitely not useless... except Hyena's.. cause they often bug out, get stuck in a different animation pose and stop attacking stuff.
This bug still happens to basic thralls as well.
However a hyena, crocodile not really ideal combat pets
just run by, catch the pet and go back to your base
about hyena: only aim for greater ones, then change them into greater abysmal hounds (if you have this option)
the hounds wont bug out and are very good pets in the beginning, even late game...
