The best weapons you can find are some of the legendary mauls with high damage and armour pen. Equip your thralls in the best armour you can make -- Dragon armour or Redeemed Silent Legion or Godbreaker. You can add armour plating mods to further increase their protection.
Of course, until you're leveled up enough and geared up you'll have to do with the best you can craft yourself. I'd still recommend the Tenderizer -- you need an upgraged Pit of Yog and a Yog Confessor for the best result.
You can find the named Darfari in Thugra's Stand (doh) and the large desert camps (Summoning Place, Skulker's End and Riverwatch Camp). They are much less likely to kill a recruiter than the Cimmerians and level much much faster.
They start with low HP, so you will need to be careful till they get a few levels. Do not let them get engaged by a large camp. Humans are the most dangerous foe these days so you will need to learn to pull carefully. The best thrall weapon is the mace because thralls will do a full combo and get stun immunity. The best mace for a thrall is Momentum which is still available from the Kithan traders for a mere 15 oboli.
The thrall strengths go in this order..
1. Exiles
2. Darfari
3. Lemurian
4. Black hand
5. Dogs of the Desert
6. Heirs of the North
7. Forgotten Tribe
8. Frost Giants
9. Votaries of Skelos
10. Relic Hunters
Even if you get a named darfari it still won't be as strong as a Lemurian for example.
As for group clearing thralls, the simplest answer is there isn't... thralls die when exposed to groups take at least 2 thralls to New Asgarth and you'll find they'll only kill half that place before dying (providing they're at least heirs of the north upwards)
You can try 2H swords which may work, there is no stunlock avoidance you take damage you get stunned, and yes thralls get stronger from the deeper you go within the map.
Once they have some decent HP, and a legendary weapon they will plow through bosses faster than Dalisina or Kisthis ever did.
It doesn't make a lot of sense that the second tribe you meet would give you the best thralls, but this is Funcom logic we are dealing with.
As far as weapons go, 2 handed sword is a decent choice as is a 2 handed mace, though the 1-handed mace appears to still be the best option when used without a shield because thralls don't have a clue how to use shields properly.
My personal choices for thrall weapons, depending on what my thralls and I will be fighting, are either Momentum for the sheer damage output or Aja's bane for the 10% hp insta-kill ability.
