where is smart to build a starter base?
hi. i just started this game for the first time. and i bulilt a little starter base by the Shattered bridge. but im feeling really hesitant about expanding it, as im not sure its a smart spot to be. its good if i want to get up the big orange city place( havent been there) but it feels not great to go anywhere else.

and far as im aware, i can only have 1 base like place? and there is not fast travel between built "bases" right? which is why im feeling more and more unsure where i should start a proper base. and yes. i know im overthinking it.

You are correct. The 'noob' river is not a good place for a permanent base. There is little iron, soon the crocs and shalebacks will give you little experience and you are a long way most of the places you will want to go.

Place a bed in your base then get out and explore. Put down a bedroll when ever you get to a new area. Find the sinkhole and attune it's obelisk, then look for a place not to far with iron, wood, stone and water. My recommendation for new players is around The Hand of the Maker in G6

You can have many bases depending on your server rules, but it is best to concentrate your crafting benches in one base. The last spell in sorcery allows you to build Transpatory Stones for fast travel, but fast travel between a map room and and obelisk is better because it doesn't involve corruption.

Think of having many bases, each as a spot to stay whilst exploring each area thoroughly.
You can also build shortcuts to help travel faster, whilst exploring for where you'd like your main base to be.

Why would we need many bases?.. especially starting out its not hard to travel plus your resources will be all over and it takes longer to construct multiple bases.. just create something and be happy with it especially on officials, people want spots too.

As for starter base.. noob river near the sentinels is an island across from where the guy is next to the bonfire I always start there it's a nice spot and the only issue really is shalebacks if you venture too close.

I'm an odd ball in this game. I like to play the vagabond. Don't build anything until you have leveled up, gain knowledge & attributes. Place a bed roll down often, go explore the world, kill what you can. Loot boxes for tools, weapons, armor or buy. Go to Sepermeru, far left of center on map. Lots to scavenge there. Find your way to library, get the cartographer. Now go attune yourself to has many obelisk and EEWA mod portals that you can find. Now you're ready to fast travel the world and it only took a few game days to do. Now go explore. I like being close to one or two of the portal systems. but that's me. Take your time my friend, enjoy the game as a first time player. Luck

Once you master sorcery, literally any location is fine, but that'll be a long process for a brand new player. In the meantime, keep in mind that you can disassemble the vast majority of your base for the same amount of materials that you used to build it. Only a few constructions like upgraded religious altars will give you back fewer materials if you tear them down. You may as well get some practice using the construction system now so you know what type of building location you'll want later. Packing up your starter base and moving once you know the game a bit better is a rite of passage for every Exile, excluding those weirdos who can't bring themselves to ever tear something down once it's built.

If you are playing solo mode, There are a few places along the river that are rich in resources if you know where to look which include iron and brimstone, so you won't have a necessity to venture into northwestern or jungle territory. Also, if you're careful you can avoid unnecessary combat in those areas while you're leveling up. I know this because I've leveled all the way up along the "newb" river more times than I can remember.
If any of you want to know where those places are .. I'll post the coordinates for you here.

However, in MP mode your choices of those places could very well be restricted very easily because of others who most likely already built massive bases near those resource rich areas. Also, those players can tend to be extremely ruthless when it comes to anybody even trying to build near them up to and including exploiting the reporting system just to have you banned.
Also in MP, you have to be careful how much you build and where you build for the same reason I mentioned just above.

i have a base setup at B8 on one of the ponds there
built the base over the pond for private fishing, trees and rocks plentiful, food around the pond, rhinos close by for skins, and Thrall City to the south

I've never seen the need to move from noob river, particularly if I can grab the beach outside Gallamans Tomb. Decent Iron plenty dry trees, and brimstone and mushrooms to level quickly. Map rooms and the sorcery teleporters do the heavy lifting.

I sure wouldn't mind checking out those coordinates. As a big fan of that river valley I should like to compare your sweet spots with my own sweet spots. ;)

F-4, G-4, H-4, I-4, J-5.
Go look around.
Try your luck building in some of the big trees you'll find.
Not very far from each of those coordinates, you'll find a lot of iron ore. Also in some of the caves facing the river (such as the Executioner's Entrance), you'll find both iron ore and brimstone. In Sinner's Refuge, you'll find a mother-lode of brimstone along with many potential employees. Gallman's Tomb has a lot of brimstone and a few crocs (with a boss croc holding onto a piece of the Scourge Stone).
You'll also have potential pets such as hyenas, gazelles, crocs and shalebacks.
In some of the camps, you may find potential named "employee" candidates.
At one camp (Lookout Point at J5), there's always a crafter there. It's easy to avoid combat with them by skirting around them to collect tons of iron ore.
I often like to build a modest base at the top of the C-shaped peninsula at J-5 since I favor the docile shalebacks and protect them from the crocs and get a lot of reptile hide in the trade off.
On the east end of that island at H-4, I've taken to trying my talent with building a base in that big tree. Always a potential cook employee and fighter at the east end. They're always having a discussion about dining arrangements with the croc there on the east tip of that island. Also, near the base of that big tree you'll find puff ball mushrooms that are ideal for making poison gas orbs and arrows.

Once you can make explosive arrows, it's just a field trip of a couple of days to go to the cold north to grab star metal. I don't really bother too much with making star metal items anymore except for the improved cold storage box.
You can avoid getting into combat during your trip if you're careful about the path you take.

The west side of the island in J5/K5 has been my go-to starter location for ages.
There's iron right across at Lookout Point, and Brimstone at the Executioners Entrance/Deathwhisper Ruins cave(be careful not go to too far in and avoid the skeletons early on) which you can easily sneak into avoiding the camps alltogether with the ramps leading up to them bar a few spiders.
It also used to have invaluable ichor from the basilisks which gave great xp before they reworked the building mats, and an early random T4 named exile thrall near the basilisk pond on the island.

Will do, thanks. This is exactly where I spent a lot of time myself.
I shall now compare my mental notes with your suggestions. And have a closer look at that big tree. It had not occurred to me to try building a tree house ... I was more looking around for a nice spot in the cliffs, because that is what the game itself suggests in one of its loading screens.
