Sure, there seems to be empty places that should or could be utilized.
But those "empty spaces" are not empty.
Those empty spaces are where the dungeon instances are that you're teleported to when going through some "doors".
Kurak's dungeon, Warmaker's Sanctuary, Black Keep, Sunken City, The Dregs, Witch Queen's Palace, The Wine Cellar and the Midnight Grove. (Those are the dungeons I can think of).
As to why aren't they located below the mesh of the current map, the reasons I'm sure are various. Sure, it would allow for more utilization of the seemingly empty spaces on the map. Afaik, there may be limitations to the engine that restricts building "below the 3D plane". Yeah, I know that sounds ironic since there have been players who have exploited "holes" in the map to build below the 3D plane. It's been a struggle for the developers to plug those holes.
Go into Single Player, Admin and then Creative Mode. Teleport around. You'll find them.
You'll also find that quite a few of them are encased in gigantic black boxes. This is to give the particular dungeons a dark, ambient atmosphere.
Hmm I think the obvious solution would be to do what I think RUST did and what ARK is currently doing and do a huge engine upgrade.
The amount of improvements that alone can provide is massive.
That will never happen. The UE 4 in use is heavily customized with elements of UE 5. It is not a straightforward upgrade process. The last time they did an engine upgrade was to allow compatibility with gaming consoles. The game was literally unplayable for about a month due to all of the issues the minor engine upgrade caused.
I don't expect they'll do it tbh, but with all the improvements UE5 offers it would greatly increase the game's performance as well as other things.
I know it's not an easy thing to do nor cheap, but personally I think it's worth it if the game gets serious performance improvements because of it.
Conan's a lot of fun but the game has some issues with performance, specially in certain locations like New Asgarth.
I get FPS drop there even if I turn all the settings down and I know others with significantly more powerful PC's have the same issue.
I dunno what causes it but It's not hardware limitations, just something screwy with the game.
