yes, they teach you religion/lore

make wheel of pain
Make blunt weapon from same set as wheel recipe
Make rope

hit enemy until he falls, use rope on him and take him to wheel

NOTE: you cant climb and swim when holding slave on rope, beware

The religion/emote teachers are scattered around the map, you find them by exploring. Beyond that, there's a small city in the NW desert that is filled with non-hostile NPCs, a few of which are merchants.

That's a good point... but gruel, not soup, since they are both existing foods. :P
On that note though, gruel has a long spoil timer, but it's also pretty inefficient as a fuel. If you can spare some cooked exotic fish or lobster, those are much more efficient fuels. One of those outlasts 10 gruel, by a long shot; both being what you get for one cooking action.

There are frendly NPC's in Sepermeru (the Set city ) to the west the NPC's there dont attack and you can find a few merchents to buy stuff from there too.
Oh and the NPC's in the volcano are nice too they dont attack you ether.

This group at Muriela Hope made me really nervous while I was talking to the priest, but they never raised weapons on me. I've since built nearby.

We can't possibly give you directions to every place with a non-hostile NPC, as they're all over the map. If you absolutely can't wait to find them while exploring, then you're going to want to Google up a map of NPC locations.

As for the console, you press the ~ key.
