Depends on where you go. In some places it is wise to wear heavy, especially epic heavy depending on the dungeon.
Most out in the open places in the south only require light, but medium can be helpful.
Up north, typically at least medium armor.

But why not always heavy? I don't see the point of light or medium

I understand you ... finaly only in the begining of the game I wear light bc of the free space in my inventory and heavy when I go for fighting. But that counts only for the beginning-levels.
So - when you reach a high level and don´t like to switch the armor (bc of styling) heavy armor is the final solution - you can´t go to the harder regions (north and dungeons) without.
And that also means: you are right, finaly light and medium are less important.

They removed a lot of the point recently but it still applies enough; lighter = quicker. if i'm wearing heavy, i've at least got an advanced flexibility kit applied to it. Also kills RP wearing heavy all the time, i only put one on if i'm taking on a dungeon or a boss where it makes sense (swimming around atlantis in godbreaker armor would be ridiculous), regular outfit is a mix of light and medium pieces for me. Suits the character better and enough protection for vast majority of fights (helps if they're flawless). You might not be able to take as many hits but you don't if you're fast :)

Every type has it's advantages, the obvious ones being light is faster and heavier protects more. I used to wear medium armor all the time, as I found it the most balanced overall, but with the last changes to rolling I think medium and light are not in the best spot right now, so I've switched to wearing heavy. Still there are people who even now prefer light/medium for the increased movility and reduced weight.

@Denzee

The problem with heavy armor is its basic weight. You run out of stamina pretty quick especially if you are trying to climb a wall.

There are several modifications for armor including less armor weight, more flexibility, durability and more defense.

Allthough the weight reduce with heavy armor doesnt have an impact for climbing.
You will have stamina issues everytime while climbing as long as you dont fix it with a flexibility kit.

Light and medium armor doesnt have that much of a weight penalty and even in combat, sprinting or climbing there is way less stamina drained.

Nevertheless stamina drain also depends on how much encumbered you are

In terms of combat there is no reason to wear anything other than heavy. There used to be a huge difference in how effective the dodge was, but after the latest change it has been reduced to tiny variations of a fat roll. If you're going to get hit (and you will), then you might as well shave off as much damage as possible by going heavy.

Outside of combat things are a little different. Each armor piece tends to favor a particular stat, so you can plan your build around the armor sets in order to reach certain perk thresholds. Weight doesn't really matter that much anymore, since you can use either a bearer thrall, horse, or pet to carry the load.

tl;dr Go heavy for combat. Use whatever armor pieces that supports your build outside combat.

I used to wear nothing but medium armour all the time because I like to dodge attacks rather than take the hits if possible - it just feels like theres more skill and fun involved. However, once I started spending most of my time in the frozen north with the wall-to-wall sabretooths and Cimmerians I switched to exclusively epic flawless heavy armour, because you're gonna get hit up there and when you do it hurts a lot without the heavy gear. So now I sword 'n' board and use the shield to negate most of the damage that the armour doesn't soak up.

To offset the weight and climbing issues I just apply armour reduction kits to all the pieces and then make sure I always have my climbing boots and gloves with me (which hardly weigh anything). The climbing gear pretty much totally offsets the penalty for heavy armour and you can just switch to them when you need to do a serious climb.

You're not tied to carrying various armors around with you and that can definitely be a pita.
Where possible, set up small encampments at various strategic way points to store the armor you'll need for the specific area with it's challenges. You don't necessarily have to build any buildings as long as you can find a suitable "hole" to throw down a bedroll and camp fire to lay low in .. and there is plenty of them if you look.

One reason to not wear heavy armor is that you will die from the heat hunting Elephants.
I even started to overheat with partial medium armor.

Some areas are just too hot for heavy armor. I also found that taking off my heavy armor didn't save me, I still died from the heat.

afaik, temp resistance has nothing to do with armor weight class. you're just wearing the wrong heavy armor for the heat. both silent legion and chilled godbreaker will keep you comfy in the heat... might actually feel cold in the desert with godbreaker! look for red and blue bars in armor piece descriptions, they indicate the level of protection from what (and they're often not logical so worth checking)
