How to get Gossamer from Spiders ?

I have killed various spiders (no bosses). I have tried harvesting them with my weapon (a Cimmerian Axe), my skinning knife (Iron Skinning Knife), my hatchet (Steel Hatchet), and even my sickle (Steel Sickle). In each case, no gossamer.

I have also looked for spider eggs, but there are no useful and reasonably recent maps, the wikis are useless, etc. Give me a grid coordinates and I can find them - but right now, it seems hopeless.

Any and all help would be appreciated. My ultimate goal, of course, is silk.

If you follow the river north from square F4, you'll find a cave full of spiders somewhere along the north-east side riverbank. There will be spiders outside of the cave trying to attack you. Can't miss it!

If you have a sickle, I recommend going to square H4 and go north from the river. You'll find large spiderwebs (which cannot be harvested) between the rocks, indicating the presence of spiders. There will be lots of gossamer in that area, which can be harvested with a sickle more easily when compared to the spider cave I mentioned before.

And what tool should I use to harvest the spiders to get gossamer?

You can gather them by hand (pressing E), but using a sickle will give more.

Go to any spider area / cave and look for the white egg sacks, when you pick those up you get 1-2 gossamer. You can also use the scythe, can't remember it's name, the item to harvest plants on them to get a lot more.

E/F - 5 area on the map there is a spider cave, right along the river, it is where I go for gossamer.

I take it, then, that the spiders themselves provide NO gossamer. You must get inside their cave to harvest the eggs with your sickle.

They can, but it's not a common drop and it will be like one piece. It's far more efficient to harvest either in the cliffside spider area or the cave described above. Neither area is that bad to access, with the cliffside area Mart talks about being slightly less dangerous if you don't go for the main area and stick to the southernmost cliffs right near the entrance.

There's a .... well ... a place to find a lot of Spider Eggs, at around H5 on the map.

mactheknife - you didn't provide a link to any specific places for information. Furthermore, and as I said in my original post, prior to this thread I could NOT find useful info. This situation reminds me of WoW, where lots of experienced players say (with a sneer, no doubt) "Google it." You can get lots of inaccurate information that way, but very little that's truly useful.
