Edit: In all my playthroughs I skip hardened steel entirely because how annoying it is to craft and the (majority of) recipes that require it are useless.. (compared to SM)
Thank you for the input, collecting star metal it is then :)

Once again emitfudd is right. Obsidian tools have 2 more points of harvesting power so if you can get obsidian tools then you probably should. Obsidian is fairly easy to obtain as long as you can safely go to the areas where it can be harvested, but smelting it can be tricky if you're playing online on a PVP server (or PVE-C during PVP hours) since other players can attack you and steal your obsidian at the only place where you can smelt it. Obsidian has no cleaver or pickaxe so you will probably end up with starmetal versions of those tools unless you're on Siptah and can use Eldarium.
edit: Corrected an error. Thanks emitfudd!
Sorry, I meant pickaxe. There is an obsidian pick, axe, sickle, and knife. No cleaver, no pickaxe. I've corrected my error.
If you're talking about Chef's Trusted Cleaver that has a harvesting rating of 10. Star metal is 14. The bonus with that cleaver is that it has a very high durability, but otherwise it's basically a steel cleaver. It's nice to have, but you can make better.
I don't use pickaxes at all. They basically have a random chance of functioning like an axe or a pick when you hit certain things, specifically any resource node that produces a different resource when hit with an axe versus when it's hit with a pick.
A tree is a good example. The axe always gives wood and stick, the pick always gives bark and resin. Smack a tree with a pickaxe you could get any of the four and have no way of knowing what it's going to be. Using the axe or pick means you gain exactly what you want, not a random chance of each. The axe and pick aren't heavy enough that I care about carrying two tools instead of one and if I'm short on hotbar or radial menu space (and I rarely am) I'll just manually swap them.
You could, but if you don't harvest and use meat very often it really doesn't matter that much. Plus the price is right...
This is the way. We farmed black blood toolset for our new characters last night. Got a lot of spare to give newbies too. Amazing durability even with upgrade kit, also same harvest rate as obsidian. Only downside is you can repair only with legendary repair kit. But it totally worths since we can craft that kit. i always skip obsidian since black blood is out there. Also they look much better for me.
