I have that happen once in a while, I let my Thrall do most of the work and get out of the fight if the target's health is getting low. If you put down a couple of foundation stones in the area you can always jump up on them and get out of combat.

If it still works the way it used to they will regain health if you give them time to recover.
You could also downgrade to a lower-level truncheon.

Because iron truncheon does so little concussive damage that the damage from your strength kills the NPC before he/she gets knocked out.
Use steel truncheon with advanced blunt kit on it.

The HP damage makes their HP drop faster than the concussive damage can do to their concussive meter.
Better thralls require higher tier truncheons that do more concussive damage.

Edit to add example:
If each swing hits for 5% of their max health, it'll take 20 swings to kill them.
If each swing does 3% of their concussive meter, they're going to die before falling unconcious.

Or get authority I can knock out anything with iron but I got 20 authority. Back in day you got like 50% increse from a str trait sigh its gone now.

You don't need better you can do it with iron if you spec into it sigh. Its just like before if you went all in archery you couldn't use blunt arrows or javelins with out killing them. Now people are confused as the str buff is long gone.

This can happen with the basic truncheon and a T4 exile thrall when the character has no extra concussion damage.

Solutions:

1. Put points into Authority and or wear gear with + concussion damage (hyena fur is available early)
2. At level 30 upgrade to the iron truncheon and put the blunt fitting on it.
3. Give your thrall a truncheon.
4. Go for a better target with more HP. Try a named Black Hand fighter or a T2/ 3 Dog of the Desert. All of these will make better followers than a Exile. The Dogs will take much less time to tame and will come with steel weapons.

this wasnt a problem before 3.0

I have max authority and an iron truncheon with blunt kit. It will take a fighter thrall (because presumably they have higher HP) but will kill t4 crafters in my current area. The truncheon damage has been significantly increased and needs to be brought back down.
Note - I am an agility build with 0 points in strength (truncheons are listed as a strength weapon)

This is a long standing problem with either characters that either didn't have the old strength perk that doubled concussion damage, or were on servers that increased player damage. If you had the level 10 strength perk before and don't have any points in Authority now, there's your problem.

I discovered use of the blunt javelin from Kiahonfire

It’s a game changer. I’ll never truncheon again. And I am maxed authority. 19 corruption

While the blunt arrows do deal the most concussion damage (I think) of all blunted weapons, they have the drawback of the bow itself dealing damage in addition to the damage from the arrow. You'll likely need to use a weaker bow (like the starting bow), and don't do the aimed attacks (which deal more damage).

i might try the javelin

It was a constant problem before 3.0.

I had to switch to the weakest blunt weapon I can to not kill thralls, especially with bows. This was before 3.0. It's actually feels much better now as I have a character with 0 STR and using a blunt spear doing pretty good at knocking them out.

ok the javelin is awesome
