And I love that you can adjust the settings to make it less grindy (or more, if that's your thing!).
Downside: No friends around for shenanigans.
So yes. C:E worked great as a binge-and-ignore game for solo players (and still will if you're not into the BP), and also works great as a log-in-and-do-a-little game, with or without the BP (well...depending on level and re-rolls). With sliders and mods you don't need a full tribe, so if you like playing, say, Ark solo, C:E will be fine. If you're enjoying it, I'd say keep going. But as a busy player, I'd also suggest NOT buying the BP until you see how you're doing on the challenges. As I understand it, you can buy it at any time and work towards completing the challenges without having it bought, so if it's just not working out with your schedule and it's getting towards the end of the season, that'd be a good time to decide. (Honestly that's my biggest regret, because I KNOW to do that with mobile games, but I went for it anyway this time and wow, what a grind.)
Basically you need to ask yourself how badly you need a story in a grindy, building, crafting game with mediocre melee combat. For me personally, I've been enjoying the update because it gave me a head canon of being a resentful sorcerer bent on ultimate power and taking over the land, and that's quite a monumental goal for a solo player.
But don't get me wrong, the game doesn't have a story. It has some snippets of lore, which can be quite interesting at times, but your experience will entirely depend on whether or not you can live with zero real quests, and your ability to back off when you're in over your head and come back later.
That being said, with three button presses you can make yourself admin, and can have anything you want instantaneously, including immortality, teleportation, all items, even npcs if the experience becomes too much for you or you just wanna move things along. I really like the flexibility to do that when the game becomes bullsh*t. lol
