The Sorcery update has a bunch of armors that now give Follower Damage when worn, and of course make sure she is running 20 Authority to get the best out of her pets. I personally recommend Healthy Diet at level 10 and Well-Trained at level 20 Authority. If she wants to corrupt her Authority then I'd only go up to 15, and not take the level 20 Authority because it's very unpredictable. Though personally I think Authority does great corrupted or uncorrupted. It's totally up to you.
I really like the Skelos Cultist Master Armor that the Sorcerers drop a recipe for. It gives +8% follower and +6% agility weapon damage per piece, for a total of +40% to Follower damage if you run the whole set. Then eat some food and drink the follower damage potion for even more damage. Sorry I can't recall the names of those two right off. I think it's Lasting Feast for the food. Then just make sure to grind the pet up to 20 before you tackle bosses, and of course make sure it has food in its inventory to heal during fights.
(Edit): Blood Sausage is pretty easy to make, and offers a small boost to both strength and vitality leveling, and is the best healing food for Sabertooths. If you want to boost raw Vitality use Savory Flesh.

again, thanks for the info
There are only 2 ways to improve the pet itself. Getting a greater version (random chance, if possible, depending on the food you use to tame it up in the animal pen is the first. The second is feeding it the right food as it levels up. Food boosts the chance of a specific attribute getting a bonus when the creature levels up.
