Cheapest steel
Hi. I start this thread in case you were wondering how to get steel fast.

Normal way of obtaining steel is by smelting iron together with steelfire, which is a result of mixing brimstone with tar in the alchemy pot.
Considering you have to farm lots of prey to get enough hides for tar (or mine enough coal), and that it takes lots of time to process it all (unless you have multiple crafting stations) then this way is time and resource consuming.

Much faster and cheaper way is to go to the warding towers west of New Asgarth, kill the nordheimers and loot the steel bars. You will however realize soon that it only yealds like 40-50 steel with luck.

So you can do even better and go to the black keep and fight the silent legion troops. They mostly carry around 10 steel bars. They fight like human npc and wander around alone or rarely in twos, so you can just bring a shield and avoid/block their attacks. There is enough of them there to bring 100+ bars home, and it wouldn't take longer than half an hour.

And you can do a black keep dungeon run while you are there. Just don't try to go in the underwater route, it's a long way underwater with frostbite, and in the end you find out that the enterance is invisible and that route misses some textures.

I believe you can. Just go through the black keep part, not through undergate. And be prapared for the final boss. I guess you should be level 43 or 44 and equipped with ancient weapons simply to save some time. Daggers work especially well for bosses with their bleed.
<- lv60 with frost ice sword (127/9% damage) >:-)

I haven't tried Black Keep in testlive yet, but I completed it multiple times beforehand.

Also, if you don't want to do that, there is about 3000 iron ore all around the base and immediate vicinity of the Tower of the Bat (if you use a steel pick).

Set yourself up a smelting station nearabouts. Also, skinning knife gives a ridiculous amount of hide, it helps immensely.

Also once you have a map room, you can fast travel to the Black Keep, so you just have to walk home with your loot. If you are playing on a PVE server where you keep your gear on death. Fast travel there, loot up to you can not move, then remove bracelet!

Yeah I know. I have a leather/iron base there. It doesn't change the fact that it costs a lot of time.
1. farming hides
2. mining iron
3. mining brimstone and hauling it to the base
4. mining coal/wood to fuel furnaces and alchemy pots
5. waiting for all that to happen
So for it to be cost effective you have to craft in bulk quantities, and I usually don't do that.

I'm playing on a default settings singleplayer and I walk everywhere.
Yeah I am a big fan of doing that stuff in bulk. It's easier to maintain once you do one large run.
