What all do I put into a composting box?

I feel like an idiot posting this, but having just come back from a long break waiting for more content, I'm loving all the new stuff to do and map to explore. That being said, there are a lot of items I have no idea about.

I'm trying to get compost going, and I see the little side window showing a few things that go into it. It shows plant fibers, rotten meat, and a pile of black powder? What is that black powder? What should I be going after to get that? I've googled the hell out of it but no wiki pages seem to have any info and no videos I've found go into detail enough to tell me.

Sorry for noob post.

SIDENOTE why am I having to wait until after iron tools to get a skinning knife? =[ that makes no sense lol

Black powder is gotten grinding bones and hornes in a grinder. Grinder is easy to build and works quickly.
