Can you role-play?

Starting out, like with any game like this, I dig into the lore, factions, etc., and try to build a character that has a reason to be living in such a world. However the more I dig into this game the more I learn that Race is meaningless. Religion you can just change like flipping a switch, you basically want them all for the emotes and crafting items. The more I learn from those playing the game the more it sounds like you are not playing the game right if you try to role-play. Which for me, is very disappointing at least.

So is there an effective way to stay true to your character, or is that just a complete waste of time and just handicaps you too much to be worth it?

When you have learned Conan Exiles (CE) in depth, it becomes easy due to your own extreme competence. This fact is true of human dominance of most games. But there is so much content in CE that the drop in difficulty due to player competence becomes a drag on enjoyment long before that content is exhausted.

Some of the best threads in this forum deal with how to maintain an enjoyable challenge rating once player expertise is achieved. I forgot his handle, but one guy had really worked out how to keep the game fun. Search for goat bow and you'll find him.

Anyway, this game cries out for role play. Yes, role play will hamper you. You are astoundingly capable and you are going to steamroll this game if you don't set some sort of limits on yourself. PVP is an obvious way to maintain a challenge, but you can make a great argument that role play is just as good and probably more fun.

You can role play, I suppose, but I don't class "role play" in computer games as real role play. It's just a faint shadow of the role playing games I cut my teeth on, and in computer games the players try in vain to make stereotypical races and classes mean something to themselves. It's just pixels bashing pixels to me. I'm on modded servers where RP is optional and I just don't bother with it at all.

Yeah Tach your post takes me back. Live, albeit table-top, role play got to be an art form back in the day. Total immersion, plus some social interaction. Sad and stilted, but social.

Good times. Nothing computerized comes close.

Even better its not like Skyrim where you need a degree in comp sci - just Beyond Theatrics and you are set!

How exactly do you bed anyone? I haven't seen a 'Let's Bang' option.

I decided to play a Pict and added the Savage DLC for flavor. Not sure what religion the Picts would use though ... not the snake of course.

Picts are Shamanic and the God of choice is Jhebbal Sag. As for the "Let's Bang" option lol, there is a mod that deals with that

You can, and there are role-playing servers, but expect little to no PVP, mostly building a home, and lots and lots of typing in taverns. Also, expect 99% of RP servers to be full of pornography. Essentially, think of the Second Life crowd, demon horns and all.

You can definitely roleplay, look for community roleplaying servers. Talk to them on their discord or whatever they have, and see what they're about then give it a try.
