Solo rhino tips
Finally got around to going east because I need to gather some thick hide for tar and some heavy armor, but im finding the rhino a ♥♥♥♥♥ to fight.

The main problem is that the rhino keeps glitching me out where my camera gets stuck inside the head of it, I can't move out and have to just tank the damage and spam my attacks until the rhinos movements cause me to get out again.

Also damage, does the rhino have its own natural armor that requires AP damage like spears?

I always fight them with either spears or war axes... but I never fight the alpha rhino, IMO is not worth the pain.

What I try to do, though it does't always work, is to position at their backs, and before they start to turn around, to do 1 heavy hit and run sideways(*) at sprint speed... that way, you won't glitch into his head, and he will miss the next attach when it triggers... after he triggers his next attack, you should be placed at his back (since he launces forward a bit) so, again, 1 heavy hit and run...

It seems to work, depending on terrain and how well I can pull it off... sometimes I derp it, and get stuck inside him anyways :D

EDIT: Also... to avoid their charge at the start... stand your ground while they charge and at the last minute, roll dodge to the side twice... and he will miss... if you time it well, he won't be able to adjust the direction and track you... but you need to waste your stam with 2 rolls and wait for regen a bit, since if not, you'll be out of stam for the subsequent pokey pokey :P

EDIT2: Keep in mind that they cheat with the hitboxes :P They hit you WAAAAY before the 3d model reaches you... so... you have to wait to the last minute, but not too much...

It's best to practice it a bit, you can retrigger the charge if you get far away enough... so you can practice the timing.

EDIT3: (*) By "sideways", I mean in diagonal...so you can sprint at the same time.

Rhino can be a tough fight because he is constantly charging forward without flinching from your attacks. For me it's an axe and a shield. You can actually hold up your shield and block his trample attack (and the elephants as well).

An alternative for you getting thick hide though is the elk king. He is the easiest to kill for thick hide/exotic meat. And elk kings are all over the north-central green biome as well as in the snow.

My method for fighting rhinos early on is to build a small sandstone box. Basically make a few cheap foundations not to far away from the rhino, say 3x3, at the max height they can off the ground, then put sandstone fences around the edges with one gap you can climb through.

Next grab a spear. Poke the rhino with it and lead it back to your little sandstone box and climb in. You'll be able to poke the rhino through the sandstone fences with your spear, but the majority of the Rhino's attacks say 90% or so will just hit the sandstone box and not you.

Can take a bit of stabbing to kill it, but early on this tends to work with a significantly lower death rate then facing a rhino on foot.

You can still dodge most of the damage the Rhino do. if you get stuck Inside/Under him use Jump to relase urself (not roll). his attacks give you about 1 sec to react, just roll a side. and most, be carful from his charge if u go back to regen health/stamina.
also u can bring fighter thrall with you to help you.

You still need Rhino Pelts for some armors, so at one point you need to fight them :3

But, I agree that at the start, for just getting the Thick Hides, is way easier to go north and fight the King Elks.

Yeah, the Rhino Hide is great for, say, the Aquilonian set of armor. Not the best set of armor by any means but definitely one of my favorites. Also, Rhino Head Soup is OP if mixed with Ambrosia. When I would go solo hunt rhinos, I'd keep these hot-barred right next to each other and could sustain 1v1 w/rhino, if I just kept circling it whilst attacking. AND to make it even more worthwhile, the black rhino heads are one of the main ingredients in the rhino head soup, right along side exotic flesh (which is also obtained from Rhino with cleaver). It's a pretty awesome method of survival/upgrading once you get the hang of it. REMEMBER to put a bed roll close by to your 'slaying grounds', so you don't have to run to and fro.

16 SSfences, 4x4 square, iron/steel pikes, bedroll in middle of the square, rhino dead, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ simple....

Create a small palisade fence, poke the rhino with an arrow to get its attention. Fight it by keeping it on the other side of the fence by continuing to circle around. It will try to follow you but slower and poorly so you generally stay ahead of it. Be ready to change direction when the rhino does. It will also keep taking damage from the palisade so just keep hitting until it's dead.

Works with elephants, too, and I guess in general with animals having a slow turn radius.

Other built hunting enclosures or traps work, too, as already suggested above and their variations. And why not? People have been using such tricks in real life for thousands of years with a good track record.
