Coal or Oil?
The wiki time said Oil has a 48 second burn time. Some older posts from 2018 said oil can replace coal. Is it still a thing?

Oil is better used for epic armor.

The fuel to use is Dry Wood. You make it in dryers from Wood - you actually dry wood for the Resin (to make Stone Consolidant). One Wood -> two Dry Wood and one Resin. Dry Wood + Resin makes one Insulated Wood, but unless you build with it not much is needed.
So, in a sense Dry Wood is a surplus to needs by-product that makes an excellent fuel.

Coal can also be used, but since Dry Wood is made anyway why not use it?

Oil can be made in bulk, but only if you have a T4 alchemist.

My 2c - I think it's efficient.

You put down some fish traps and throw all the common fish you get in a presser and voila! you got a unlimited supply of oil. That is how it was done a couple of months ago, so unless they patched that away that would be the best route. You will never worry about fuel again.

@Skard: Yeah, you can do that, but (on PC, since patch 2.1) you have to bait the fish traps, and the fish giving the most oil are now the scarcest. So, without a T4 alchemist oil is kinda scarce.
But there are ways to get loads of oil from fish traps. Suggest some WAK4863 or Firespark81 YT videos - just seach for new ones about oil.

coal is easy to farm, lasts a long time, and not used for anything els

You're better off using coal to fire the furnace, stove and campfires while using the oil for armor and upgrade kits production.

Yep, coal is the efficient one now. You'll need your oil for armor. Coal just drops in the dungeons at the same time you farm the metal. If you go out once a week and hit a few coal nodes you are coal rich.
