Black Ice

I'm still fairly new to this game and I'm trying to advance through the materials right now.

It looks to me like everything beyond Steel (i.e. Hardened Steel, Star Metal, etc...) requires something called Black Ice. The wiki for this game seems a little shady. (for instance, the wiki can't tell you how to get Bones) On one hand it looks like the only way to get Black Ice is through a temple to Ymir but also some black obelisk or something is mentioned. I find it odd that a in a game with multiple religions, only 1 is key to advancing your gear. Why would anyone ever pick one of the other ones?

So, my question is (are) Do I have this right? Do I need Black Ice for everything beyond Steel? What is the best way to get it?

Black Ice is a resource that can be gathered in the snowy regions of the Exiled Lands, specifically up in the mountains. The temple that was mentioned is probably the Temple of Frost, which is essentially a dungeon in the north. There's a black obelisk outside of that area which you can quickly teleport to via a map room.

Unless the recipe was changed recently (I haven't done a playthrough in a while so I may be slightly inaccurate), black ice is needed to smelt hardened steel ( 1 steel + 1 black ice), which obviously is used for hardened steel weapons and tools.

There's a place east of the northern reservoir. Go up the hill, there are 3 bat caves, go up further. You'll find black ice, & two meteor nodes. I think it's H 10.

As mentioned, black ice is in the northern regions. It isn't scarce and when exploring up there, you will find numerous nodes of it all around. Usually, you have to go to where the real snow line is, not the trees, grass and snow, but a little further up in elevation and it is all over the place. The thing is, that if you don't want to keep traveling up there to harvest it, plan a resource expedition with a bearer, harvest all you can and load the bearer up and load yourself up as well.

Like a lot of things in Conan, it's impossible to find until you find it, and then suddenly it's easy to find and never a hassle again.
