Use the hammer to see what your current decay timer is. If it isn't 6 days or whatever, you need to use more materials. So, if you want, say, a chest out in the middle of nowhere, put it on a few t3 blocks first.
I lost almost everything in an outpost that was inside the house and outside on connected foundations(Greater wheel of pain, big campfire, 3 chests, 4 crafting stations thralls and 1 door), funny thing is that all foundations, the house and a map room was ok, it was just everything in it that disappeared after the update.
I somehow feel lucky only to have lost this, one of the veterans on our server(pve official 1013) lost his entire base in just 4 days except for a yog pit, a few decorative items and a small storage building that was just outside his base up on the mountains side, these things survived his 4 days absence - This base has been his home since full release in may and now everything is gone.
I know it isn't a perfect solution, but best way is to store some of the most valuable items in rocknose, rhino, camel and other pets that can live a long time on food that doesn't spoil and put them in a place where they can't be reached by other predators until they get this buggy decay system under control, and think it already has a high priority for the devs - The official servers are bleeding players because of such things, so hopefully they will find a solution sooner than later :)
