This worked the best for me - I tried with both the sickle and the pickaxe, and I got LOADS more with the pickaxe. Thanks for the tip!
So I know I'm like about 4 years late answering this question, but I went searching for answers yesterday an found nada on farming the little buggers. Foraging for handfuls of bugs is crap using a sickle, so if you have a pc and can use mods read further. Silkworms in the emberlight mod are fantastic for silk, and when you boil them to make silk it will produce lots of handfuls of insects. An for those just now finding this out, silkworms eat grey-flower lupine. So set a couple planters next to your silkworm habitats and put lupin seeds in the with ranch water and compost and you're all set to farm. Hope this helps all you derketo zealots trying to level up your religion, because making elixir of freedom is the only thing giving me manifestation of zeal an it takes 10 handfuls of insects every time.
