I have never seen it in game, but I have seen it on stream.
Stay around the Mounds of the Dead long enough and you'll see them.
I saw it on an RPG server, that had x4 harvest rate. I believe that is also what officials run on these days. However, there is a difference, that most PVPers would not want to build in that area for obvious reasons (resource denial not worth the potential of base breach with no PVP effort), and PVE has little point to doing it, as you won't be engaged in resource denial. So I think the only servers that really will see this kind of thing are RPG servers.
A nice place to build that’s close but safe from showers is Carrowmore, the site of a destroyed fortress with plenty of standing walls to hide your base behind.
I tried to build in that area before. IIRC the meteors wouldn't fall and leave star metal. It was way too much work carting resources back. But the end product was nice, I do like the snowy areas myself.
While you may be able to do cool structures with lava pitfalls and whatnot, there aren’t any armors that protect against extreme cold in some of the mountain tops to the tip of the map on the northeast.
You’ll have to wear warm gear and constantly chug warming food to build your base, but once it’s set you’re golden.
Rumour has it, that this is going to change. DLC armor provides just a smidge more protection than Freebooter. However, that also means you can't run around everywhere with it. Exactly how this is going to be in the future, I do not know.

I tried getting a shot of it hitting some building pieces but it turns out its actually quite hard, even with the meteor shower set on a 2 second loop I only managed to get 1 wall hit, a direct impact to black ice walls will destrroy them, this is the best clip I could get with a meteor hit, not really interested in this so I didn't spend much time trying to get a better clip lol.

Just asking because it’s not too optimized for maximum exposure.
