Yes, but the dagger will give you less resin. A hardened steel dagger gives me less resin than a lvl 45 pickaxe (lower lvl tool). The only real advantage is the one you mentioned, you dont find wood if you use a dagger, so you wont be encumbered.
When you are able to craft a drying rack, use the bark for fuel in the drying rack, add wood, and you will get both resin and dried wood for a longer-burning fuel than coal in all your furnaces, cooking pits, etc. This way you get 2 dried wood and 1 resin for each piece of wood used. It uses a lot of bark but if you harvest enough wood with a pick, you won't have issues running out of bark.
