I also tend to lower the thirst rate to minimum, because IMO the game forces you to be constantly drinking otherwise. (EDIT2: specially true if your base is located anywhere where temp is an issue.)
I set purge difficulty to 5, and minimum players required to 1 (I often let the server run while not playing and I don't want offline purges.)
EDIT: Forgot, I also increase the day and night duration to ~3x in total, but I reduce the time the night takes to about ~2/3.
All other settings are default, IIRC.
The exception is the damages dealt and taken.
Damage modifiers are:
Player Damage dealt 3x
Player Damage taken 0.5x
NPC Damage dealt 0.5x
NPC Damage taken 3x
Durability set to 1.0
Bosses are still difficult, but not impossible. (no mods necessary).
Just started a fresh game and came across the imp boss near the Shattered Bridge in the starting area. He kicked my butt, but I came back at him and finished him off with a stone club.
Came across an Albino Demon Bat boss in the Aviary (Unnamed City),
Used hit and run a lot then got up on a spot it couldn't reach me.
Kept shooting him with a bow till he went down.
I've come across minor bosses now since the last patch, they're tough, but not impossible.
World bosses require preparation and tactics.
