What happens is that they immediately stop "Following" you and switch to "Scouting".
A "Scouting" follower will remain in the area it was in, and will continue fighting. It may, or may not be capable of surviving on its own. It varies based on its level, the enemies it's fighting, and the weapons it has equipped.
Eventually it will finish the "Scouting" phase and enter the "Returning Home" phase. Both of those phases are supposed to be fairly short, but I've had them last for extended periods.
After the thrall "Returns Home" it will reappear at the last place it was set to "Guard".
Followers will not continue fighting unless a player character is in their area. Nothing happens in a CE server (or in single player) unless a player character is in range. Often it is better to let your follower return home rather than be killed. If your follower can win the fight without you, by all means return to the scene of your death as soon as possible. If not, avoid the area until your follower has left.
Had to be said.
