What's the point of obsidian?

So I reached the point where I can go to the volcano and not die instantly, the place is awesome and so but I went to get obsidian.. Only to find out that star metal and dragon bone weapons are stronger even they are less tedious to get? Am I missing something?

Also note that I'm not playing on an official server if that may have something to do with it, no mods either

Is the same for all Obsidian tools, they are the best possible tool that can be crafted in the game.

You can get gold from obsidian nodes, but thats one question i had too.
The rate you can get obsidian massivly outpaces the rate you can use it for. So what do you do with it?
Harvest like 20 nodes and be good for weeks?

To be fair I don't think the obsidian tools are worth the trouble you have to go through to make them. Having to use the volcanic forge to get the composite obsidian is just a big pain in the arse.

Best tool you can craft by far is the star metal pick axe - having said that getting star metal can also be a pain in the arse. So I suppose it depends on which pain you can endure.

Personally I use a star metal pick axe and then use the black blood skinning knife and sickle.

I was told obsidian building foundations are the strongest in the game, but you have to unlock lemurian building first. I think this is done by defeating the witch queen in the jungle and interacting with stelas. There are obsidian weapons also, but iirc they are nothing special.

Obsidian nodes are the best place to get gold however.

ps. Don't kill me if Im wrong. Im playing on a server with lots of mods, and I cannot be quite sure which elements are in the base game and which are mods..

Pretty sure obsidian buildings are a mod, just as lemurian.

Both are modded. Though, I've never heard of a mod with obsidian buildings.

Ever tried the blackblood tools, they are not a mod though I admit the can't be crafted but they can't be beaten for the amount you harvest. You need to find the boss bat demon and kill it to harvest the tools, pick, axe, scythe and skinning knife.
