How in the ♥♥♥♥ do you use the animal pen?

I placed an animal in the pet box and I don't see it in the pen.

I am trying to find information but this game doesn't allow you to know anything. Google doesn't help. Is it too much to expect this game to have any form of documentation?

I built the animal pen. I see a slot for pets and a "inventory" which I presume is food. I put the pet in the pet slot but nothing happens even after I add food.

How do I know if it's taming????

You need the right food for the right animal. It seems to take forever even on x10 I found this guide useful
