I think it high index.
And let's face it, GPU don't live for ever.
It's a big game, so you would be better with a bigger GPU, look at a 1060 at least, still better a 1070 or 1080 for recent games.
That's simply a fact. Also you didn't mention the rest of your system. XD
a game can't overclock your graphic card and a game can't kill it just like that.
It is true that the game is badly optimized and GPU utilization stays at full 100% over long periods of time, and most importantly any kind of light source makes heavy impact on GPU utilization... and weather effects, and environmental effects... etc.
Still, the only reason your vid card burns is because you haven't set the fan vs temperature curves properly... and because it's NVIDIA :D ((no kidding, the ONLY vid card I ever burned in my life are ALL nvidia...)
Lol... I was just joking with that, of course :P Always fun to add fuel to the old amd vs nvidia fight :D
EDIT: I realize, the "no kidding" part might have been confusing... sorry.
That part it's just because that's a real issue, at least in my own experience... I burned due to overtemp at least two nvidia cards over the past 15 years.... and I have overtemped several of my AMD cards, and they never been burned out... they just shut down and/or switch to low consumption state, gracefully.
OP you are so very funny. You have inferior PC or cooling system and rather than fix the issue you pick a game to blame. Well below is a solution that works well, it is on Steam and it is free. It will help make sure your Fans work as they should. It is not the developers responsibility to keep your PC cool. Remember too you must clean the Inside of your PC with a can of O2 to blow out the dirt and dust.
