It sometimes (rarely though) fails, if the rock face is too irregular, that's why it's better to do it on places that look smoother or have a slight incline.
EDIT: Should have added, if the face inclines inwards (i.e. getting away from you,) you'll have hard time grabbing to it, unless the fall span allows for you to get to the rock face before you splat :D
Unless you're being chased by something nasty, never jump without pausing to look down first... you want an incline outwards or, at the very least, something towards the bottom to grab on your way down. If it slopes inwards and you miss your one chance (which you very likely will), you'll leave a mess on the ground when you land.
I find that holding the jump button rather than just tapping it makes it more likely to actually grab on. After nearly 600 hours of trying to do it, I still miss occasionally...
It's been a while since I posted this. But if I'm understanding your directions correctly... the way to climb down a cliff is to hurl myself off of it and hope I can catch it before I slam into the ground. There really isn't a better method than this?
Not as drastic or risky as jumping off.
But when it comes to jumping, I'll try to aim for a nearby face to grab onto while on my way down.
I gotta tell you though, those concave faces are murder.
I don't normally jump off blindly, what I normally do is to jump parallel to the rock face and try to target a part where I know I can reach (i.e. because it's incline makes the cliff bend outward, f.e.)
If I have to jump down straight (maybe from the top of a tower or something like that) I try to be as careful as I can to be able to reach back to the walls and grab... you can just walk off the edge moving backwards and as long as the walls are straight (i.e. don't get away from you) you should be able to reach them by pressing W while looking towards the wall and press jump to grab.
If you want you can practice in SP mode, just enable admin and turn on God mode and you can't die from falls... and get to places and practice jumping until you get a feel for it.
The practice then involves grabbing on with more than twenty feet to spare because if you slide down the cliff face and hit the ground you still take fall damage sometimes. You want to grab on high enough that the slide stops just before you hit the ground.
I should have at least mentioned that I'm quite familiar with the map and familiar with places where it's a fairly safe bet that I'll catch the face on the way down even if it's close to the bottom just before I "hit the deck" with lethal damage.
The more familiar you are with the map, the better your chances are that you can make such jumps.
On extraordinarily long drops, I'll press the "w" key while on the way down where I'm at least in contact with the face. I then make a "judgement call" on when to hit the space bar to grab onto it.
Takes some practice, but the more you do it, the better your chances are of catching yourself "at the right second" to expedite your arrival at the bottom of the cliff face without getting injured.
Unfortunately, not all faces or jumps can be made safely without serious consequences. But they're lessons learned on which places to avoid repeating fatal mistakes.
