Point of Gold/Silver Rocknose?
I found out that they could produce Gold/Silver stone as a byproduct of eating stone in the animal pen. I thought "cool, gold stone is hard to find" so I spent a bunch of coins on the Rocknose eggs in order to try and farm it. Turns out that even with shade food they are hard to come by...and then they don't seem to last long enough to even come close to pay for what was purchased.

What is the point?

There are 2 places where pets don't expire, a freezer and the pen, off course you can only have a max of 5 pets in a pen, it acts like a breeding and production unit, so their timer is paused while in there even if you don't feed them :)
The timer is meant to prevent people from storing tamed pets in chests or other inventories, you can off course place them in world to get rid of the timer, but then you can never return them to a pen or other inventory type :)

I bought 50 to split between Silver and Gold. Through 30 and I got 4 Gold and 2 Silver using the shade gold/silver dust.

I don't see them replacing the resources it took to get them, so if they don't replace the resources before they expire....I don't see the point in having them there in the first place.

Guys you leave them in pen and feed them rocks then they will slowly produce iron and gold/silver over time, think of them as a constant gold/silver producing machine :)
I've got 15 goldvein rocknoses and I have a stash after some months of more than 2000 gold bars, not counting those I already have spent :)

Everything I have read states that they die after a set time, when I did a timer check on mine I found that the timer is in fact decreasing despite not being displayed.

If what you are saying is true..then perhaps they don't die while there...but after the amount of time you have used them, if you take one off, it will die instantly.

EDIT: On a sidenote, I do find it hilarious that you can put your pets in the Improved Preservation Box to place them in 'stasis.'

Thanks, I will see how this goes.

I also found out through taming so many at once that the higher level the pen...the faster they tame. Not sure about production after tame though.

Armored was about 2x faster than the Normal Animal Pen...so i'd guess something close to

Armored Pen = 2x
Reinforced Pen = 1.5x
Animal Pen = 1x

Was interesting to see them tame that way after everything I read saying that they were not different from one another anymore other than HP.
