I'm not sure if they would count it as friendship, but you can bonk them on the head with a club until they pass out, then put them in a wheel of pain until you become friends.
Yes actually you can make friends with NPC's. First you find one you like and get him alone. You then dab him/her with the "truncheon of friendship" repeatedly until they get tired. You then attach a "friendship bracelet" onto them and take them to the "Wheel of Companionship" (we call it our HR department) and feed them a healthy meal for a few hours until they are ready to join you in whatever way you see fit in friendship. I have made hundreds of friends this way.
This is far more along the lines of wording choice I use when attempting this in real life.

Thats Great! I love that statue idea and poor poor pirates indeed. ♥ I haven't played on servers much but I'm sure thats the only real way to have friends you don't have to stick in your pockets.
