I personally love them its nice to store food in them best part is food when it goes bad only rots 1 of its items in it so its easy to keep a stock pile of food in them and great if u just want to grab a stack of food and just go on a adventure and not take time at that moment too cook stuff.
Also and this is one of the main good things is sieges if you build a castle and get under siege having food storage with preserved food will be a life saver.
But there optional there amazing but if you don't like them u dont have to make them i think the dryer for food worse it does make food last longer but it only works on the type of meats that give u like no hunger fullness and drying the food makes it even worse then just cooking it so like a stack of 20 dryed food would take like 10-15 of it just to fill your hunger all the way...
Any ways preserve lobster in your ice box fish take time to get in traps so u want to always harvest them cook them and place them in the ice box.
As for lasting for ever nothing forzen last forever and ice boxes where diffrent then a refrige ice boxes ice still melts and it dosnt generate cooling it just maintains the cooling but its still melting so in a ice box specialy wouldnt last forever but if u notice the ice in the preservation boxes last a really long time so thats nice =)

Also given the relative technology state - they wouldn't have had iceboxes. They would have had ice cellars or shacks - and the equivalent for smoking/drying meats.
The second tier icebox has 10 slots, a little investment but a time saver. Having five of them filled with cooked exotic meat, for a clan, is very useful. Grab a stack of 20 that takes forever to rot, go off and do something, come back put the meat back in the icebox when you log off, or while working around the base. When it takes 1 piece of meat 8 hous to rot, well 8x20 means you have meat for 6 days, instead of you and every clan member having to harvest it every time you log in. One person harvests meat for 10 minutes, cooks it and you are good for a week.
I find them handy. They were almost mandatory before they fixed plant harvesting, which made numbing wraps trivial to make. When numbing wraps were a pain to farm up, I did a lot of blood sausage heals, which were easy to make but decayed too fast. Cook up like 60 of them and stick them in a preservation box and have heals for a couple of days.
I still use them to store food. Do one big food run, cook it all, throw it all in the preservation box and then don't worry about food again for days.
Truly bizarre that I can make a box out of hardened steel before tools.
