I have had 5-6 things chasing me with my pet and no issues.
They can be good tanks. Use one light hit to initiate combat, block with shield and wait for pet to get aggro.
If you run away your pet will warp to you effectively disengaging from combat.
Don't name them and get used to losing them.
Thralls you equip can be way better at combat.
In pvp they do not help you against other players outside of raid times. You can not kill other players pets outside of raid time. Server setting may alter this, so be aware if you are on someone else's server.

Ah, I appreciate the information. Thank you! I preffer to play entirely on solo/co-op, so I have no intention of using pets in pvp. I was merely curious what their behaviour would be in combat, and seems to be they are going to behave as I hope. Something to consider with recruits too, I think pets will be much better for general enemies.
