Defending from a Purge
I have started to gather resources to build a proper base instead of the haphazardly-placed crafting tables and couple recruits in order to defend from an eventual purge. I am planning to staying near the river for the time being as I am nowherenear done exploring that zone, besides having water on one side should hopefuly mean not expecting enemies on that side.

However, at lvl 6 difficult settings... what can I hope to do with sandstone structures? I thought of upgrading, but the resources for better buildings are scarce in the desert to say the least.

Resources are not scarce to upgrade. I have my base near the river and upgraded to the Insulated Wood. Just need wood and Iron to do so. Iron is bountiful in the desert, look around the tower of bats, I fill up a 30 slot pack animal and myself and there is still some I couldn't get in one trip. Easily 4000-5000 ore there.

Wood is no problem trees galore along the river.

Build a fence or wall around your base and get get some T4 archers and fighters and some greater animals for defense.

You can upgrade to T3 while living near the river.

Oh I see I see. I need to look in the right places then. Thanks both for the info!

If you ever played Stronghold 1, purges are kinda like that. Multiple walls, barriers, palisades and plenty of archer towers in front of the walls that set up crossfires are your friend. If they break your gate or wall, have a yard full of tooled-up fighter thralls and you should be good. Especially setting up on the banks of the River Newb.

Edit - Also upgrading your defenses to higher tier structure makes it much harder for a basic purge to punch through.

I've been purged near the River and up near the Pirate Ship using sand stone building materials and have gotten only a small amount of damage.

The northern base is only approachable from one side along a ledge and I made a wall 7 blocks think and 6 high on that side and they didn't get through it.

In the south along the river it only took about 15 minutes to repair the damage done, and I got attacked from the south side which I didn't think would happen and was less defended.

Hm, interesting. I am in a place with three possible sides to be attacked from. So I am going to ... try to spread out buildings in a way I hope resists the attacks.

Yeah I generally get stonebrick set up before my first purges hit. A 2-thick wall with an outer 1-thick "fence" to try to funnel them into a kill zone outside my gate usually does well. Picking a spot with only one or two directions to defend lets you concentrate your resources on better defense and more thralls.
