I've been a mod author for a year and a half now. 99.9999999999% of the "I'm having troubles with getting you mods updated" messages I get are exclusively Gportal related. Not to mention the half a dozen times or so that Gportal has randomly removed mods from people's servers for no apparent reason.
And then there is the extremely annoying Gportal claiming a mod is "out of date." When all Gportal does is that it checks to see if the mod has been updated on the Steam workshop in the last 30-60 days, it doesn't actually test to make sure the mods work right (fun fact, depending on what the mod does and how its set up, you could potentially set it up so it never needs to be updated. I have a few such mods). So I have no idea what the point is of that.
As for what I recommend, I don't have any real personal experience with any of them. Not anything signifcant anyways. I've heard plenty of good things about:
GTX Gaming
Host Havoc
Low.MS
BlueFang
SurvivalServers
Nitrado
And now ServerBlend, lol.
The crew is the shiz. Been there since 2016 with Ark, Conan, Pixark, Minecraft, etc.
GTX.... I left them for ServerBlend.
Oh, you know what...
My Ark server with 30 mods boots in less than 60 seconds. 'Nuff said.
He aint joking on the reboot time - can bring down a full modded ark cluster and have it back on line after an update in about 5-10 minutes - vs 25+ for other hosts.
GTX Gaming - crappy CS and from what I have seen their entire service is going downhill. Databases frequently get corrupted as well.
Host Havoc - LOL
Low.MS - even worse LOL
BlueFang - never heard of, never used, no comment
SurvivalServers - NONONONONO no! Did I mention, NO!
Nitrado - never used, no comment
Serverblend also set the Server Tick at 60 FPS. The ONLY beef I have with serverblend is that after updating a mod you may have to FTP the modlist file which honestly isn't a big deal vs database corruptions, long reboot times, poor customer service, etc, you get from other companies.
- GPortal - cheap and very user friendly server setup. Other than that, servers are quite laggy, their forums are dead meaning for everything you need to send a ticket and wait for an answer. Forget about reaching them on the phone (it won't happen). Upgrading or even changing your payment plan is not an easy task as you have it pre-paid. I tried to extend my server time before my current period has expired and ended up a big mess. At least CS sorted it out. On the other hand, you don't have to worry about cancelling your server, once your time is up, you get a notification that u have to pay within 5!? days or your server will be deleted (you have FTP access so you can download your game files if you wish so).
- GTX - so far great CS, offer smaller servers and quite some flexibility in upgrading them. The server setup panel is much more complicated. You kinda need to know what you are doing there :) I cant comment on the server performance yet, too soon for that but so far, I am happy with them.
I wonder if anyone has a comparison chart by cost, features, reviews (one star to five star).
I used Gportal because it was cheaper than a few others I looked at. It did have that odd "out of date" message, but I've made mods myself, so knew that message could be ignored. Gportal is the kind of go to host. I suspect a lot of people use it that are pretty clueless about mods and hosting and can then be a pain in the *** for mod developers.
I play on a few servers hosted by Gportal right now. I'd use it again, but maybe it isn't for everyone.
