This. I don't trust them at all. I played Age of Conan at release. My guess is these are almost entirely reused assets from 2008.
Funcom has great ideas and absolute ♥♥♥♥ execution.
yet your still here on the games forums... bad mouthing them when you can instead of not bothering playing the game or lurking on the forums.... hmmm... ok
Anyways, seems it's the typical funcom lazyness indeed. Well, thanks for taking the time.
This is how i know you are a troll,
THE FACT that ue4 and conan exiles have developed one of the best skeletal models ive seen, lets us know you dont know what goes into making animations. I dont think theres many games maybe none at all, that have this kind of skeletal system. they have bones for everything from the fingers, to the hands, even lips and eyebrows too. I want to know of other games that are sandbox survival with good animations comparable to conan exiles.
You seem to be confusing the pawn skeleton features and potential number of bones with actual ANIMATION.
Just because you have 100 bones doesn't mean you are animated when frozen. This is what happens here - really bad clunky animations.
Let me give you a hint: animation is the motion that is captured and triggered for bahaviors. And let me assure you - the stuff we see here are BAD animations: https://youtu.be/2oYmZsemsmQ?t=35
Just watch 0:35 and tell me those look good to you. If yes we know that YOU are a troll. Fortnite has better animation than this...
Also my question was not what other sandbox survival games exist that focus on the same concepts, were released on the same year and with the same tech level and have DLC's of roughly the same amount to be comparable. If you have questions for yourself feel free to open a thread on your own.
My question was simply why this game, costing roughly 125€ with all DLC's, still has animations that look super clunky and cringy in it's trailer which is supposed to advertise.
I played funcoms "games" since anarchy online already, so I'm surely not a newb to the genre or their games that you need to lecture.
Hence why I was simply asking if it's only the trailer, which I linked for reference including timestamp, or the whole game.
On that note I looked up some Youtube videos and it's not just the trailer. Even combat looks like WoW - with animations hitting into nowhere, weapons glitching through the pawns and e.g. the combo attacks not chaining fluidly but actually looking clunky as well.
E.g. clearly visible here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwa6_dOqYzk
I will not even begin to ask how a 20kg maul maul can whirlwind through another human @3:10.
Or how that same human can get up after one second when hit like that.
Or why the head of the guy he attacks with that 2h maul came off and rolls to the side @3:16.
UE4 skeleton or not - it looks clunky, dated and needlessly brutal by adding cheap kill animations.
I like the overall setting more than other games which usually focus on guns. But yeah, honestly I will just skip this for now until maybe gets fixed at some point.
I specifically mentioned the animations being clunky, not stitched together well for attack combos and the emotes looking cringy.
I also added video sources where this is clearly visible.
The reason why I added that is because someone confused what bones are to a pawn in UE and mentioned that having a ton of bones results in good animations - which it doesn't.
In fact it can be argued that too many bones are actually making animations worse since they are harder to mocap (motion capture) and more demanding to simulate good interactions with.
This is what it would take to really mocap full body animations including eyes, facial expressions etc. for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rD074Yemlpg
"I will not even begin to ask how a 20kg maul maul can whirlwind through another human @3:10." The fact that stuff like this bothers you , means you shouldnt even be playing games. Theres no actual game at the moment with a full on ragdoll physics for combat. ANything and everything from right now CLIPS, ITS CLIPS into each other. All of WoW armors clip into each other, the sh oulders mainly, the weapons all go right through each other. Any game with melee combat does this. but you just wanna complain about conan so i think we are starting to the see the problem here.
yeah im done. later, troll confirmed.
Secondly this is not WoW. I only made the reference because of the fantasy combat modeling while you quoted some super crazy realistic and advanced bone system (which is mostly UE4 default). They don't even use it fully - not for animations nor for combat simulation.
Third there are TONS of games with full body hitboxes and ragdoll physics. Heck, there is even x-ray stuff that simulates internal organs and the bone system.
But that wasn't the point. Again, I made that reference because the animation looks dated and fantasy / cartoonish because of that.
So I'm not sure why I'd be a troll for asking if it's just the trailer.
Also I asked specifically because that trailer shows off and mentions those emotes! It's not me who made something up - it was their advertisement which made it pop up on the stream frontpage.
A whole hearted: "yup, the game has odd dated animations but it focuses on ... instead" would've be friendly and I would have likely bought it. Which is money for Funcom, something they need badly considering how unsuccessful their recent games have been. It's not that I don't have like 1k other weird or outright bad games on my account already...
Let me close this whole thing with some words of advice. You don't have to attack people to defend the game. In fact you might not realize how damaging it is to a game to have such a toxic fanbase.
