If you give them what they eat, they'll progress in taming.
It doesn't really matter what food you give them as long as they consume it.
Better quality foods don't guarantee an "alpha" pet though.
Best guess is 1 in 10 will turn out to be an alpha, but the odds aren't consistent or predictable. (similar to the roll of the dice).
Would recommend going for full pen with same animal type. At best you have a 1 in 5 chance of being greater (around 20%). Though it is always random and you might be unlucky and get 0 greaters other times you get 2,3 or 4 best I've ever been able to get was 4 out of 5 as greater versions.
With regards food, always try and make Shadespiced version it give a 10% higher chance with greater, they do decay after around 4 hours so they need to be either made shortly before use or stored in cooler.
All info says you are wrong. There are different chances dependent of food type for Greater Variants...
The point is, even if you have shadespiced in the animal pen, the pet will consume something else if its higher up on the table. Therefore, it is recommended to put one animal type, or at least animals that share the same favorite foods/highest chance at a greater pet, followed by only the specific food type you wish for them to consume.
Here's what I've seen happen in taming only one animal at a time.
I've used solely shade spiced food of their "favorite" kind and got basic pets.
I've used solely the best of their favored food (assuming there is a best food) and got basic pets.
I've used a mixed bag of foods and noticed maybe 1 in 10 turn out to be an alpha.
In one case I was taming tigers and out of 6 in three separate taming episodes I got two white tigers in one session. No specific meats were used. Just a mix of meats.
So as far as I'm concerned, the chances of getting greater pets doesn't depend on squat. It's a random chance.
To make it simple and unexploitable, the more you tame, the better your chances are.
Like I said, it's a roll of the dice.
Your observations are incorrect. Both the RecipesTable and the Wiki page on Pet taming detail how it's an RNG factor. It's a roll of the dice yes, but it's a weighted roll of the dice based on the food.
