map progression

i am currently at about f4 on the map (just slightly north of the river). ive raided the dregs, the cavern of fiends, and skittering cavern already. today i hit shaleback hollow and maybe warren of degenerates.
after that i will probably move my base to somewhere else.

i am completely unsure of what is the logical route to follow.
should i stay closer to the river first and move slowly east building various bases as i go and hit the caves, etc and when ive finished east to come back and move through the unnamed city and around the rivers moving northward or is it better to go north first then backtrack to the east?

i realize its open world and i can sorta go whre i want but id like to follow the logical progression if possible...

Journey steps are probably going to be your best bet at any semblance of logical progression. Outside of that, everybody's got their preferences and favorite building spots.

If you do a search on the net on best places to build a base )there are a bunch of threads on that topic here as well), you can get a good idea of the pros and cons of the different areas. Deciding where you are going to build will depend on what resources you want/need, journey progression, and your personal game style.
