So...black ice recipes
Decided to start over after my game came to a grinding halt with black ice needed for everything in later recipes. Plus after seeing some of the revamps and editions they made to some earlier recipes, I wanted to make a clean start. I'm wondering though, do I still need black ice for everything under the sun after Ancient gear?

The Black Ice is only needed for the items added with the Frozen North.

Does that include the new high end weapons they included with the patch (the new ones that need hardened steel feat to unlock)

Whats wrong with black ice?

black ice is easy to get.. head all the way north to the edge of crater(avoid combat if you are running alone).. follow the paths around there and you should find some nodes that will give black ice.. use the pickaxe or higher for as much as possible :)

You need black ice for hardend steel which all the new weapons need. The new desert armor only requires steel. THe armor upgrade kit's use leathers and the weapon upgrade kits use hardend steel as well.

Star metal weapons and tools would need black ice to make the ore into bars too. So you're going to have to get some :/

Just go high encumbrance build, take like 200 shaped wood to the frost temple, if you're in full fur you may hit frostbite when entering but if you keep running you'll make it eventually, bring heals!

Kite the giants around til you can drop the shaped wood on the forge after learning the recipes, drop on some black ice that is all over the temple and cook a bunch of picks and weapons. Grab those and fill up on black ice and if you aren't using black ice for structures, you should have enough black ice to last you for some time.

Originally I thought black ice would be hard to get, but it honestly isn't. I found 5 nodes of black ice on the top right of the map and it gave me 451 ice with a lvl 45 pickaxe. They're stupidly easy to get and you can walk up there with just simple fur or just bring a hot drink.

And no legion getting in my way or other nasties? I would really like to know where exactly this place is. Can someone please circle it on the map for me?

Lol of course theres nasties. Dont think you can run up there naked at level 20. On the map, due north from the mounds, you'll see the ice lake. North of there is the Ice Temple. There are black ice nodes scattered thru-out that area above the frozen lake. Theres also, sabertooths, wolves, mammoths, and ice giants. And a few bears enroute. Best bet is to get north of the snowline and build a base along the cliffs. You'll need star metal anyway, if you want to make the armor. All the meteors fall up there.

You can even get some black ice when mining ordinary ice nods (not just ice from riverbanks but crystals of ice). It's about 5 pieces of black ice for 500 pieces of ordinary ice: not too much but very easy to begin with.

I know the area your reffering to, I'm refferring specifically to the Legion, those undead guys that hit hard and take forever to kill, even with my best weapons. The seem to be all over that area.

That's what I was talking about, was mining all that ice (which is perishable) and frozen shards (which took forever to harvest) just to make 20 pieces of black ice or so.

Run up the green west border starting north of the crowngrove and before mounds of the dead. When you get to the snowy area along the green border its about 200 to 300 meters ish you come to 4 blackice nodes. 1 is half in the green border so be carefull. You will meet 0 nasties this way.

Not just so. You can get black ice from ordinary ice nods without any Ymir stuff, just like iron ore when mining stone. It's even not so rare as iron in stones.

Western middle side of the north, found plenty of ice, black ice. Only ran into some mountain goats.
