I'm confused, Single player or MMO?
Is listed as single player however, most of the comments talk of playing in servers. Is this game able to be single player? Or you have to play in a server?

its a multiplayer survival game, you can also paly it on your own local server you host on your local pc, which is the singleplayer but it is not a MMO.

I cant say if you like to play a multiplayer survival game in singleplayer, that depends on the individual.

Personally I like both modes. I play on a server multiplayer or just my own single player when I want some quiet time to enjoy the game by myself.

Optional, that's good. Sometimes I just prefer to play on my own. Thanks to both of you.

Personally, I already prefer to play only in Single.
Too many bugs and exploits in online. And there I depend too much on the administrator or on other players. I just do not want to spend my time on it.
Besides, I believe that at this stage, the development of the game is possible only in a single mode. I can not even imagine how the developer will be able to implement Purge, City Life and other new mechanics in online. With the current state of affairs it seems to me unreal.

I generally run it all vanilla too less mod bugs to add to core game bugs.

Just adding more to what's already said:

Single Player works just fine and great. Server/admin controls are extensive and can let you really alter the game to fit your needs. The game is "designed" with multiplayer in mind, so default server settings reflect that (such as gathering rates). You can alter the single player experience to award more feats (to gain access to all the crafting tables) and harvest more to reflect you are on your own (say double gains, for example). Or you can keep everything default, whatever you prefer.

If you have a friend or friends you want to play with, the co-op option in the menu "works" but it's severely limited with the joining player(s) being forced to stay within a short distance of the host at all times. As such, it's almost aways better to host your own server (we ran a server for a while off a friend's old laptop), or rent a server ($15-$20 per month for a small server, depending on who you go with). Or for a more "MMO" experience, join an official server.

Options galore, basically.

you have to be online at the startup of the game to be able to play offline
