I cant say if you like to play a multiplayer survival game in singleplayer, that depends on the individual.
Too many bugs and exploits in online. And there I depend too much on the administrator or on other players. I just do not want to spend my time on it.
Besides, I believe that at this stage, the development of the game is possible only in a single mode. I can not even imagine how the developer will be able to implement Purge, City Life and other new mechanics in online. With the current state of affairs it seems to me unreal.
Single Player works just fine and great. Server/admin controls are extensive and can let you really alter the game to fit your needs. The game is "designed" with multiplayer in mind, so default server settings reflect that (such as gathering rates). You can alter the single player experience to award more feats (to gain access to all the crafting tables) and harvest more to reflect you are on your own (say double gains, for example). Or you can keep everything default, whatever you prefer.
If you have a friend or friends you want to play with, the co-op option in the menu "works" but it's severely limited with the joining player(s) being forced to stay within a short distance of the host at all times. As such, it's almost aways better to host your own server (we ran a server for a while off a friend's old laptop), or rent a server ($15-$20 per month for a small server, depending on who you go with). Or for a more "MMO" experience, join an official server.
Options galore, basically.
