Dont know, but I do think s/he has built with a lot of patience, putting the peices as close together as they can be without snapping. Though for a while about two different levels of starting foundations, but they ought to snap together as well. Interesting to see how to :)
Setup: gather materials for several tall clay pot and a few foundations.
1. Place two new foundations side-by-side, adjusting the first one with your shift+mouse wheel until it's two clicks above ground level. The second one will snap to that level.
2. Step back from the two foundations. Step to the left, to be centered in front of the leftmost foundation piece. Put a tall pot in your hotbar. Don't move.
3. Hit the hotkey for the foundation block. Hover your highlighted pre-placed piece over the area directly in front of the left-hand piece you placed in step 1. Don't move.
4. Hit the hotkey for the tall pot and place it exactly in the middle of where the pre-placed foundation block was.
5. Hit the hotkey for the foundation block again. Center your view on the clay pot and hold "e," and dismantle the pot. It's essential you do not move during any of this.
6. If you've done everything correctly you should be able to now place this foundation block with a veeeery slight separation from the two original blocks. You'll know because the pre-place color is different for a new block vs a connected one.
7. Shift+roll your mouse wheel to elevate the new block so that it's thrall-walkable, etc.
Happy building!
As I heard if you place vases around the block it won't snap to it anymore.

Just put something like a torch or something in the ground.
