How do you upgrade foundations and walls ?

ow to I upgrade from sandstone to higher grade material without having to destroy my base?

You can't at present. Must replace the blocks.

Think of it as an opportunity to expand. Bases that dont spread out are highly vulnerable to being annihilated by avatars.
