How about Amazon GameLift for hosting official servers?
It uses EC2 instances.

I don't know how the pricing compares to some of the more "traditional" providers but from a technology perspective, it seems like a good solution. I use EC2 for a lot of work-related things and it works very well for my purposes.

Good suggestionI hope the devs see this, even if it is more expensive. Maybe post this on there official forums to?

Well, right, you would think no expense would be spared on the official servers within reason.
