Unusually Low FPS on GTX 960[[Solved]]
Hey everyone, I have been getting unusually low frames which has been preventing me from being able to enjoy the game, i usually average about 5-20 FPS regardless of settings despite having a semi decent system I like to think. My system specs are as follows if anyone has any input they think might be able to help me. I have the most recent GPU drivers as well.

Operating System Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1

CPU Intel Core i5 4690 @ 3.50GHz 98 °C Haswell 22nm Technology

RAM 16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 666MHz (9-9-9-24)

Motherboard MSI Z97 GAMING 3 (MS-7918) (SOCKET 0) 41 °C

Graphics BenQ GW2760HS (1920x1080@60Hz) 2047MB

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 (EVGA) 52 °C

Storage 1863GB Western Digital WDC WD2003FZEX-00Z4SA0 ATA Device (SATA) 36 °C

Optical Drives TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-H653G ATA Device

win 7. so unlock the cores. get on 10, 10 booosts fps by a grip alone and u can unlock the cores in power settings on 10, 7 requires edit. http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/16720/enable-multiple-cores-on-windows-7/
Can verify thats the issue by seeing if cores are indeed parked while playing. play windowed and open task check cores

my guess if its not that the 960 is on the weaker side of things as a 970 is required for high. I know thats prbly not what u want to hear. Curious if you have ark and what u run that at

I think it's just the game. I have a GTX 980 Ti and I get around 70-80 FPS ultra everything but there will be FPS spikes that drop down to the 35-40 on occasion. Thankfully they only last like 5 seconds tops but still shouldn't be happening with GTX 980 Ti and a game that looks like this haha I'd say just wait for some optimization patches and make sure your drivers are up to date, play on lower settings and go from there tbh. Just something to be improved with time.

I got the exact same system spec as you... just my SSD is different and win 10. I'm getting around 50 FPS with ultra/high settings and AA turned down to 2x with drops down to 35-40 when loading structures/mining large rocks.

Just added Cores, I dont mind hearing that i cant run everything on high and get 90 fps, but i would like to run with atleast medium or low settings and get 30 fps + usually, i am doing as you instructed OldManJason and will post again in a minute with updates as i just restarted. Thanks everyone for the quick responses

So after following the first part of your instructions Jason I did notice a definite boost to fps by about +10 or so, however I am still running all low settings and only ranging about 20-35 fps.

I'm running an evga 950 SC and can get 40-60 on high. The other differences I see is a I'm running an fx8350 8 core cpu, Samsung Evo ssd, and Windows 10. I also went through the Nvidia control panel and set power to high, then set it to real-time priority through task manager.

Just figured it out, alll four of my cores are running at 100% according to resource monitor

Since you have an i5 with an iGPU I would make sure the game isn't running on that.

NvCpl > 3D Settings > Use High performance Nvidia processor

Could this perhaps have something to due with the CPU being to hot? after thinking about it 98c does seem a little high.

uh oh. lol because it is definetly 98°C.
Got any advice for bringing the temp down?

Yeah that's a problem. You should be running 50's - low 60's.

Make sure all your fans are working.
Make sure all your vents are clear and dust free.

What kind of heatsink are you using? Stock, CLC, aftermarket air?

The procesor fan maybe worn out so you probably are going to have to buy a new fan but dont worry they are dirt cheap

You guys dont wanna know how bad it was lol. The good news is i got some new thermal paste and gave the old girl a deep cleaning and now i can run the game at 60+ fps constantly when running in all the lowest settings. Thank you everyone for your input and advice.
