You can rotate the steps using mouse wheel :)

That doesnt work, no matter what i do or try it just wont snap, its not even snapping the stairs to the foundation to be able to rotate

break the doorway, place the stairs then replace doorway.

I'm assuming you are having the issue because of the "traingle" piece. They can be rather fickle. I had an issue earlier where I was attempting to put a stair case down and it simply wouldn't go, hundreds of clicks in the highlighted position that I wanted "failed to place item". I rotated it 360 degrees in place and it clicked in first try after that. Weird stuff happens.
Also you may be having an issue where there is occasionally an overlap that you do not necessarily see obviously...this is especially true with the triangle pieces. Think of the stairs as one large solid 1x1x1 cube, if any other object occupies that space it will not go.

Im just trying to put stairs next to a foundation so i can walk up instead of jumping, thats it, its all im trying to do, why you trying to make it more complicated than it is....
No one mentioned triangles !!

I was trying to place some walls on foundations and they would not snap on one side no matter what i did. I dont know what happens to stop you from placing things but it is some kind of bug in certain situations.

sometimes I have to back up a ways before it'll let me rotate into proper position, dunno why.

I found if the foundation is low to the ground, (but still requiring you to jump) they will not place, I had to place my initial foundation much higher (using a rock to make it place higher) to get the stairs to snap, like in this example screenshot

then remove a foundation put stairs then foundation...same thing with doors at first had to go 1 wall higher

I am sure you have tried it already, but I have had a lot of placement problems solved simply by standing in a different place, preferably a different elevation, when placing. Often I get failed to place or invalid notices, but I move around and do the revolve item and then suddenly it fits. Annoying and weird.

Shift + Mousewheel raises or lowers the placement ghost vertically (Z axis)
Then CTRL and ALT + Mousewheel rotates the ghost on the x and y axes

the only fix i found was to remove all foundation and place them higher like williemccr show'd

I did try moving all over the place, even had the foundation on its own, would place on 3 sides just not the side i wanted it to lol

But thanks for suggestions guys :)

update broke stairs for me. i can no longer place them in my base even when there is plenty of stability it still thinks there isn't enough.

CaidZilla, I did have the same problem.

Found out that the solution is to break the connection between certain foundations. If it's like 3x3 foundations and you cant place stairs on them, try to remove three in the middle (result = two times 1x3) and place the stairs and then replace the foundations. It is weird, I know. Same with removing building pieces and all of the sudden two rows behind you walls come down or a wheel of pain explodes. :D
