You don't need a crafting bench to convert gossamer to silk. You can hand craft it in your inventory.

I found a spider cave in this video. Like TheRageTrain says you can kill spiders and chop up their bodies for gossamer, then convert the gossamer to silk in your inventory (similar to making twine). Jump to around 9:50 in the video to see the spider cave location.

For anyone who might see this necro in the future - don't kill spiders for silk. Either pick up by hand or use a grass harvesting tool (forgot the name) on the spider egg sacs scattered around in spider infested areas. There's one canyon most people will pass through as you travel north that has a huge supply of them. Just be careful of the enormous world boss spider that totally won't eat your face in horrifying fashion if it sees you. Thankfully the egg sacs are mostly far away from that monster.

Using a tool on them (especially a high grade one) can result in getting thousands of silk from clearing the canyon, while picking them up by hand might get you a hundred or so.

Why not both? There are usually spiders around the egg sacks, just use the same tool to harvest any spiders you have to kill in self defense while out harvesting egg sacks.

There is a cave on the north south river near the center of the map, you can just pick the gossamer up off the ground inside and kill the spiders but be careful there are a lot of spiders in there.

Look on Wiki and ask for Spider Cave to see it's location.

I suggest that you don't carry anything valuable into the cave with you because it might be hard to recover your body if you die.

The spiders kind of swarm you, so use strategy lure them up near the entrance until you get them cleaned out.

Well, yeah. I'm just saying hunting spiders isn't a great source of silk. You'll get 100 times more from the egg sacs than you will from the spiders.
