Iron ore comes from dark grey stones. I saw a bunch near the serpent temple.

Here's a hint, move further away from the "safe" area. IE: Go north.

Yes... but it appears you cannot mine them with the stone pickaxe?

I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love how no one is really giving great answers to the important questions here. I too have found the "dark" ore nodes but nothing EVER comes out of them.

Iron nodes are in the middle of the Valley (theres 3 rivers, one big one down of the map and 2 small ones that go up the map, one in the left one in the right. in the middle of all these rivers theres a valley and in that valley theres IRON nodes, small Bluish nodes that give iron (u can pick axe them with first pickaxe) they are different than the BLACK nodes which u need iron tools i suppose to get em.

Google conan exiles map, look for the one thats been divided into grid coordinates. Iron ore and coal nodes are at coordinates F4. Its a ♥♥♥♥ fight to get there though, you need to be with a group or high levelled to survive the trip. Safe enough around the nodes though.

the more u travel and move away from the spawn area the more goody and rare you will find,
the game is made that way. so people travel and make more base with stash and stuff

venture very far lol

The easiest spot is the bottom left corner. SW of Death City. Follow the beginning river area West. At the very end there will be a fairly big tribe area. You can run through it. There will be a temple at the back. Rush up the steep hillside to the right. A little past that is ONE hyena to the right which you could easily avoid by staying to the left. You prolly shouldn't try to outrun it just avoid it. Follow the area back and continuing up the hill. The green wall of death will be on your left. Follow it 'til you run into a lot of iron nodes. The are maybe five scorpions along this south side of Death City. It is a bit of a run, but I have managed to outrun these guys. My stam drain is a slight bit lower than default BTW.

No water up there though, and stay south of Jawbone, few nasty critters if you run too far. If you have a settlement in the first valley, stock up on waterskins before you head up there. Probably not worth looking North for an easy water supply either.

First iron node I found was at the foot of the Bat temple just north of the waterfalls. On my first serious attempt at a settlement I targetted the river vally and tried to be central on the map. Easy farming, but limited nodes.

There are plenty of iron nodes laying around, if you know where to look for them.
Depends on where you're at on the map. But basically, they're all going to be definitely north of the main river in the south.
To the east (EDIT: WEST) of the Summoning place, around the base of a mesa with a small Dafari camp on top, (It's called Dustdevil Ridge) you'll find plenty of them. They'll be darker in color and look like they have rust on them.
(the iron nodes all look the same).

No you can. I think that you found not iron node but stone. There are some very dark stones near ruins, but they give just ordinary stone. Iron nodes are a bit lighter grey with rust. Lots of iron is up in the valley near the Dustdevil Ridge and the Summoning Place (lots of coal there too). There are no spiders or any other dangerous creatures, just a little pack of hyenas. Take more water and run up to the valley, it will be a piece of cake.
