D&D, then sci-fi, fantasy, action movies have given me inspiration and have been a staple for me.
When Conan The Barbarian came along (Arnold), my imagination was futher inspired.
I came across Conan Exiles recently and I was impressed with aspects of it that gave me freedom to be creative just as I had found in other SP games, except the luxury of this is that it came with SP/COOP/Multiplayer modes.
I lease/admin my server and I am currently working on the settings. For now it's a private server until later on when I feel it's ready to open up to other players who can also roleplay.

trying to promote more thought into giving Admins/DMs more options in running a RP style game. I must say for a old school gamer the RP community has welcomed and broken my traditional thoughts of how RP can be done. Thankyou new Generation! I'ts not the days of eating pizza and throwing dice...but it will do. Like so many others Arnolds Conan is really the only conan for me. that would include Red Sonja and I will be gratious and throw Kull in there..though not my favorite. My hope is "Will Funcom bridge the gap between tradition PVPer's and RP'ers?" I believe they can if things continue on there course. More options in the admin panel...YES!
-Wiki
Roleplaying means to experience with game with an additional layer of immersion by acting like your character actually would in a world like this and interacting with other players in the same way.
You develop ideas on how your character should behave in the game world, what sort of character he should be (speech pattern, mannerisms, behaviour) and maybe even come up with an interesting background story for him.
During roleplay you develop ongoing storylines either by just playing in character or deliberately planning and executing roleplaying events for other players.
-----------
Survival sandbox games are a great way to start with that since your motivations as a player and your character's motivations often overlap in the beginning. (need for food, shelter, protection) Making it easier to get into roleplay.
Ben Tenpenny's is a very good post.
For me, Rp'ing means giving an independent life to your toon, so they have aims, objectives, goals to achieve, they interact with other toons according to how you see their character. Or you can act as though it is 'you' in another universe but with the attributes granted by the game you are in...
So in short, you are writing your own "book", in the conan universe, it probably gets classed as 'fantasy', it can be whatever you wish.

OP - I dived straight into the RP PvP server selection when first firing up the game as RP gives context to actions.
OK, I started out on a couple of servers, to see what they were like (gamewise and fellow players), 1 had technical issues (constant rollbacks) so gave up on it then it closed down, the other I stayed with for a while, but that then closed, tried a couple of others, but neither stuck (no real RP and few players).
By late March I was comfortable with the game so searched the server base for an RP server, with a recent reset, a minimum of 10 players - ended up on Shadowdynasty, good admin, good rp and getting better. Player base is now circa 30-40 when busy. Enjoying myself there.
RP - Making it better - my major gripes and a lot of others are:-
1) chat box is too small (click and drag size please FC)
2) Merged global/local/clan all in the one chat box does not work in a good way
3) unable to 'tell' to single players
4) shared access (and in clan restricted access) to storage/doors etc
5) Emotes need tweaking so that male and female have different emotes for some things (too many female emotes copy pasted to males)
6) Expansion(s) to the Accessories/placeables/costumes
7) additional admin granted rewards/awards
8) player name colours in the chat box are rubbish - should be easily seen for the following types: general players, same clan members, admin enabled toons
9) player names are not displayed clearly enough in game - you need to rub noses with them to see who they are
There are more, but enough of a wish list to start.
We do this because it not only unifies our clan with a strong mission and value system but also keeps the server healthy due to the fact that at any moment, your base could be next so you better be active.
I don't believe it's so much on FC what they can do to make it better for roleplayers.
It's the people, the players who make or brake roleplay.
I have done lots of amazing roleplaying in Star Wars Galaxies (not SWTOR) with layered characters and exciting storylines. Some of which have become part of the pen&paper star wars campaign I am currently running. After the closure of the game no other MMO had the depth and the overall variety of features do deliver the same online roleplaying experience.
While pen&paper games have become my personal alternative for BioWare-style games. There is nothing quite comparable to 100 people or more participating in the same game world every day simultaneously advancing the plot in so many small or big facets.
So here's hoping that Conan Exiles will become the game I have been waiting for so long.
I am planning to run my own rp-server once the game is released.
I seek servers that are tagged as a roleplaying, doesn't matter if they're PvE or PvP. I originally used the main server listing page but it's really not enough when looking for an RP server. I turned to the Community Servers sub forum but if the adverts are not bumped frequently, they get lost in the pages and pages of nonRP serves. That is where I was lucky enough to find ConanExilesRP on Enjin. It filters out all of the nonRP and allows for RP focused servers to stand out from the masses. Not all servers are going to have players on at all hours every day of the week but if there's a group page or website, I do look there to see if the admins and/or players have current posts. From that point, I'll jump on and play for a bit to see the builds and seek any potential RP. I run my own RP server but it is refreshing to simply exist as a player from time to time and meet other admins if they are open to talking. I'd like to add that I've met a few excellent ones. As for mods, I avoid servers with them. I found from playing Space Engineers and Minecraft that if a mod you use/depend is no longer updated, your game can fall apart....or your builds. Until there is an easier way for players to join modded servers, I won't use them. Yes, there are some fantastic mods. I just find that EA and mods don't mix well.
Roleplaying for me is the heart of what keeps this game interesting. It's not like an MMO that gives you quests and stories to follow along. We as players must create our own. Basically, finding our own carrots to chase. I have gone through GM created dungeons, taken a tiny part in an admin scripted story, run small events alongside my husband as well as spent hours simply adventuring while RPing. The best part of RP for me is letting my character develop as I play and interact with my fellow players.
The hardest part is scheduling. Not everyone can be on when stories are playing out so it can be difficult to keep everyone up to speed on what happened and when. Then, as was stated already, are the functions within the game itself. The current chat system makes it a pain to communicate. I hate getting automatically kicked from local to global chat. Every. Single. Time. I will do what I have to do for roleplaying but it must be frustrating for some to the point they forego the RP.
Bottom line, I love the game and what it offers. The character models are wonderful and the direction the game is going keeps me happy. Even though EA is a brutal mistress, having roleplaying and a great group of players makes all the bumps in the road worthwhile.
Just my two silvers on the matter and apologies for the wall of text.
